A friend posed this question to me yesterday, “Who wipes the tears from your eyes?”

Most of us came up with the same answers:  when you’re young, it’s a parent.  When you’re older, it’s a lover.  Or maybe (very infrequently)  a friend or sibling.  More often though, we wipe our own tears, ashamed to cry in front of others.

One of the readings for this coming Sunday, All Saints Day, is Revelation 7:17 “…for the lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to the springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

What an intimate image is declared here.  A God who dares to humble himself enough to wipe tears.  It truly is a revelation.

Great Lord, kind shepherd, whenever and whysoever the tears fall, we confess that you are there.  Amen.
