Living Parables

For our devotion around this Sunday’s Gospel Reading (7 Pentecost, July 11, 2010), I saved a copy of a poem published in the January/February 2003 edition of Lutheran Woman Today

Passed by on the Other Side

by Marianne Jones

I didn’t know he was really injured.  It could have been a trap;

you hear about those things all the time.

Besides, aren’t there authorities to deal with such matters?

Isn’t that what we pay taxes for?

Anyway, he was probably too careless, too trusting;

Brought it all on himself.

Is that my fault?

Prudent people take care of themselves.

Of course I care about the needy!

I give my offering to the poor box every week.

I’m as kindhearted as the next person.

I would love to help those in need if I ever ran across any.
