A Prayer for Parents and Children Tonight

Today has been a sad and tragic day for many young families in Newtown, Connecticut, but also for all of us.  It feels like we have lost something very precious.  Is it the loss of a never before touched sense of security or has an undeniable sense of innocence been denied?  The very ones we as parents love most, our children, their teachers/administrators have lost so much today; and the places we entrust our children to each day feel somehow different tonight.    On nights like this, God is with us and wants us to be with our children, holding them close.  Ponder these words from 1 John 3:1, “See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are.”  Hold onto this promise tonight for your children and for you.

We share this prayer with you – God in heaven, please listen to all those who are praying to you now: those who are sad and crying, those who have lost friends and family, those who are alone and frightened.  Help them to remember that you are there and that you are listening.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.
