Another webcast. I’ll admit it…this is getting kind of fun!
On Sunday February 24, our Adult Forum spent time discussing ministry to and with our elders. The article that was our launching pad for discussion was titled, “Wholly and Holy Different” by Rich Melheim. This brief and beautiful story can be found here.
In the course of our discussion, a document titled The Five Wishes was mentioned. As some of you are working with family on decision making/future needs for medical care, you may want to read more. One of our members shared the following link: http://www.agingwithdignity.org/forms/5wishes.pdf
Imagine, upon their 18th birthday, you present your new adult child with the following bill for services rendered. As you can see to the image at left, it would be a whopper of a bill! The average total to raise a child to adulthood is nearly $227,000 in the United States.
You would never do that, though, would you?
It’s my child, you’d say. I knew the costs when I took on the endeavor of childrearing. And besides, you’d say, I couldn’t give her a bill because never counted the cost to begin with!
The vision that Isaiah casts on behalf of God is one where all are invited to come and eat, without price. God it seems, does not count the cost. Indeed, it’s likely God knew the cost when he took on the endeavor of creation.
And God it anyway!
Because that’s what a loving guardian does.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.
